Icelandic police declared a state of emergency Saturday as lava spewed from a new volcanic fissure on the Reykjanes peninsula, the fourth eruption to hit the area since December.

The eruption was also recorded from a satellite, Maxar announced.
The intensity of the eruption has decreased since the dramatic scenes seen on Tuesday morning, although magma continues to seep from the volcano.
Iceland's Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson said experts warned the eruption could last for months.

An Icelandic town near the capital Reykjavik and home to some 4,000 people was evacuated overnight after hundreds of tremors caused fears of a volcanic eruption, authorities said Saturday.

Two strong earthquakes on Aug. 24 shook Iceland's largest volcano, which is on red alert for imminent risk of eruption, the Icelandic Met Office said.
