Sibiu, June 29 /Agerpres/ - President Klaus Iohannis stated, on Saturday, that he wishes to remain President of Romania and not become President of the European Council. "I am the President of Romania and I want to remain President of Romania, not of the European Council.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Romania, Cord Meier-Klodt, said on Monday that it would be useful if the entire Government distanced themselves from the defamation of the German minority.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has said that his country is "not a second-class European Union nation."

Speaking in parliament, he added that "citizens should stop thinking that," Beta is reporting, citing AP.

German Foreign Affairs minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Monday night, in Sibiu (rd 272 km northwest of Bucharest), referring to the conflict in Ukraine, that a foreign nation calls itself a shield for one minority it has ethnic relations to, and lives in another state, Ukraine, thus justifying the violation of the sovereignty of this state.

President Klaus Iohannis says that a very good cohabitation between the Romanians and the German ethnics proves that our country "is a happy exception and a model to be followed."

President-elect Klaus Iohannis will step down as mayor of Sibiu City on Tuesday, December 2, the City Hall informed.

Klaus Iohannis has been serving as Sibiu mayor since 2000.
