SNS pushing for early provincial elections in Vojvodina

ZRENJANIN -- Vice President of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) Goran Knežević has said that provincial authorities of Vojvodina "have lost their legitimacy."

For that reason, early elections should be held in the northern province "urgently," he added on Wednesday.

Knežević told a press conference that it was time for the head of the provincial government, Bojan Pajtić (DS), to resign "due to the fact that in parliamentary elections, the SNS won nine times more votes than the Democratic Party."

He noted that on the state level, more than 3.5 million people cast their ballots last Sunday, and that the SNS was the absolute winner with 48.3 percent.

In Vojvodina, this was 46.3 percent, and 49.8 percent in the town of Zrenjanin, Knežević also said.

He then reminded reporters that the five percent threshold was crossed four parties, and that the DSS, the URS, and the LDP were left below it.

"All I can say about that is that you reap what you sow. The citizens of Serbia have sent a clear message about who they trust and who they do not trust. In our Zrenjanin, out of 70 polling stations the SNS won convincingly in 65, the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians in four, and in the New Democratic Party in one," said Knežević, who served as Zrenjanin's mayor while he was a member of the Democratic Party (DS).
