Sava threatens to rise to historical high in Sabac

SABAC - Minister of Energy Aleksandar Antic visited Sabac, western Serbia, on Thursday, the city where the river Sava will reach the highest water level, and announced that the crisis headquarters would create a plan to protect the city from the flood.

Sabac faces the highest water levels of the Sava in history over the next 2-3 days, Antic told Tanjug, adding that the flood defence would include around 10,000 people and many machines.

The Sava will reach 650 cm above the normal water level in Sabac, which is the highest ever recorded, he noted.

Highest level recorded so far is 590 cm, so the flood defence has to be able to sustain that.

After visiting the flooded areas and meeting with Sabac officials, Antic said that the management of the government company Srbija vode would come to Sabac and that the crisis headquarters would create on Friday evening a plan to protect the city from the flood.

The operation will require 8,000-10,000 people in order to raise the levee at all key locations and to reinfroce them in the next two days, he pointed out.

"We face a truly difficult three days that will involve a lot work. Although the rain is expected to stop, the Sava is carrying an enormous amount of water towards Serbia because it rained in the surrounding countries too," Antic explained.
