First step for railway tunnel linking Athens to Thessaloniki

Boring for a railway tunnel in central Greece that will reduce travel time between Athens and Thessaloniki by half an hour was completed on Friday, according to ERGOSE, a subsidiary of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE).

The 6.5-kilometer Othrys tunnel near Domokos is part of a project to improve the line between Athens and Thessaloniki, allowing trains to reach a speed of 160 kilometers per hour and cutting down total travel time between the two cities to 3.5 hours in total.
