Man sought in connection to illicit alcohol

Police in the northern port city of Thessaloniki were seeking a 53-year-old businessman over charges of running a contraband alcohol ring in the area of Kalamaria.

According to early reports, the suspect's company, which was officially trading in fabrics, had been allegedly transformed into a contraband alcohol bottling unit.

According to the case file, the illegal operation involved the substitution of labels on Bulgarian bottles of alcohol with labels of Greek alcohol brands which had halted their operations in the last few years, among others.

Meanwhile, Greek customs authorities were expected to begin estimating the loss of revenues for the state resulting from the illicit trade.
