First win for Reds with Sfairopoulos on bench
By George Georgakopoulos
Olympiakos scored its first win under new coach Yiannis Sfairopoulos on Monday, beating promoted AEK away from home, as the Piraeus club is hoping the bad start to the season under coach Giorgos Bartzokas and caretaker Milan Tomic will soon be a distant memory.
On the day that the Reds found out that their captain Vassilis Spanoulis has been voted the best player in the Euroleague for October, they also dismissed the challenge of host AEK at the Olympic Sports Hall with an 81-62 score. There is concern, however, over an injury that shooting guard Matt Lojeski sustained.
Panionios, also with a new coach at the helm, the experienced Vangelis Alexandris, showed an improved face at Rethymno on Saturday, but still succumbed to local AGOR 75-65.
The other team to change a coach is Panelefsiniakos, that after the departure of Giorgos Skarafingas lost 83-68 at Kolossos Rhodes on Saturday. Then on Monday it announced the hiring of Jimmys Koustenis. Panionios and Panelefsiniakos are the only teams without a win after four rounds of games.
At other end of the table, Panathinaikos and PAOK preserved their perfect records as the Greens thrashed Trikala 96-70 away and PAOK saw off Korivos Amaliadas 84-71 in a game where the father, PAOK coach Soulis Markopoulos, beat the son, Korivos coach Charis Markopoulos.
Aris scored an important win at KAO Dramas with a 74-70 to recover some of the ground lost after its loss to PAOK in the game that got abandoned was confirmed.
Nea Kifissia remained joint third with Olympiakos and Rethymno downing Apollon Patras 63-54 at home.
