Nikolic, Chepurin discuss recent accident in Russia
BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic called on Russian Ambassador in Belgrade Alexander Chepurin to carry out a thorough investigation about the fire in peninsula Yamal which claimed lives of six Serbian workers.
According to the initial information provided by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the fire that left the Serbian workers dead burst out on Sunday at an oil and gas site (1:39 a.m. local time), on the Yamal Peninsula near the town of Salekhard in Siberia, around 3,000 km from Moscow.
Three Serb workers were injured in the fire but they are not in life danger.
During the meeting with Chepurin, Nikolic called for a thorough investigation into the causes of the terrible accident and said that more attention should be paid to working conditions everywhere where Serbian citizens are employed.
Nikolic underscored that such a tragedy must not have been allowed to happen, and expressed the belief that adequate lessons would be drawn from the incident so that such events would be prevented in the future, the president's press service released.
President Nikolic and Ambassador Chepurin expressed regret over the recent tragic events in Ukraine and voiced the wish for the conflict to be resolved promptly, if possible at the meeting which will be staged this week already.
The Russian ambassador expressed gratitude to President Nikolic for the constructive attitude of the Serbian delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) at the session to discuss the participation of the delegation of the Russian Federation in PACE work.
