Serbia to get law on responsibility for environmental damage

BELGRADE - The draft law on responsibility for damage done to the environment should be completed by the end of June, said Tina Janjatovic as the chair of the working group in charge of drafting the document.

The law will introduce changes into Serbia's legislative system in keeping with the European directive on responsibility for the damage done to the environment adopted in 2004 which envisages the principle according to which the polluter pays the price of the environmental damage, Janjatovic said at the first public consultation on the law organised in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

Janjatovic noted that the drafting of the law is being conducted with the support of the EU-funded PLAC project.

The drafting of the document gathers around 40 experts and four public consultations will be held before the completion of the procedure.
