Greek gov't announces scheme to boost Roma living standards

Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis on Tuesday heralded a scheme that aims to improve the living standards of the country?s Roma community by relocating them out of makeshift settlements and improving their access to education and health services.

Voutsis said the government plans to work closely with local authorities in implementing the scheme but gave no details regarding the alternative accommodation it plans to offer the Roma.

The minister?s comments came as United Nations Special Rapporteur Mutuma Ruteere travels around the country in a bid to assess levels of racism, racial discrimination and intolerance.

He is to compile an initial report on his findings on Friday.
