Bulgaria's Sesil Karatancheva Beats Former No.1 at Opening of Roland Garros
Bulgaria's female tennis player Sesil Karatancheva proceeded to the second round of Roland Garros on Tuesday.
Karatancheva defeated former WTA No. 1 Jelena Jankovic from Serbia with 6:3, 6:4 in a match, which lasted around an hour.
The Bulgarian played confidently and made use of the hesitant performance of Jankovic, who conceded 45 unforced errors, daily Dnevnik reports.
Karatancheva could have recorded an even more convincing victory as she was in the lead with 5:1 in the second set, but missed a match point.
The Bulgarian started the match well and after achieving an early break, she came in the lead with 2:0.
However Karatancheva could not consolidate her lead and the two players exchanged a series of breaks with Jankovic equalising for 3:3.
The Bulgarian recorded another break, which she managed to consolidate and she won the first set with 6:3.
Karatancheva continued with her excellent performance in the second set, in which she established a 4:0 lead.
At 5:1, the Bulgarian had an opportunity for a new break and a match point, but the Serbian player defended the game.
Jankovic made huge efforts to make a comeback, lowering the score to 4:5, but Karatancheva claimed the next game and won the match.
Karatancheva is to next face the winner from the match between Irina Falconi from the USA and the French player Manon Arcangioli.
