Get ready for the Spyros Louis 2-euro coin

A 2-euro coin from Greece has been coincide to circulate with the 75th anniversary of the death of marathon runner Spyros Louis. The marathon runner had won the modern Olympic Games in 1896.

Greece hopes in this way to pay tribute to the great runner’s memory. The design shows Spyros Louis and the cup that he was awarded, against the background with the Panathenaic Stadium. Inscribed along the inner edge is the country of issuance ‘HELLENIC REPUBLIC’ and ‘75 YEARS IN MEMORIAM OF SPYROS LOUIS’ (in Greek).

 

Visible at the bottom of the design is the monogram of the artist (George Stamatopoulos). The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag. Number of coins to be issued: 750,000 Date of issue: third quarter of 2015
