Macedonia Opposition Accused of Hatching 'Filthy' Plot
In a written statement on Wednesday, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski accused the opposition of involvement in an ID forgery scandal, aimed at undermining his government.
Gruevski who is in the centre of a massive illegal surveillance scandal, accused the opposition Social Democrats of plotting "forgeries, destruction, scenarios, set ups, conspiracies and filthy moves.
"Macedonia is being held hostage by the insanity of few people in the opposition who under the pressure of their own criminality and personal failure, commit desperate actions," Gruevski said.
The latest escalation in Macedonia's ongoing political crisis began on Saturday when a police bust aimed at targeting drug smugglers, according to the pro-government media, discovered a "factory" for forging IDs to be used for rigging elections in one of the suspect's homes.
Media close to the government claimed the three arrested suspects had manufactured false passports with the names of top government officials on them, as well as fake bank transactions in Swiss banks, intended at shaming them before the April general election.
It was also reported that a large quantity of bulletproof vests as well as some 70,000 wiretapped conversations were discovered during the bust.
The prosecution today confirmed these allegations but did not offer further details.
Zaev and new the interim Interior Minister, Oliver Spasovski, who was appointed from opposition ranks as part of a crisis agreement brokered by the EU, were fingered in the affair.
Media reports on Monday showed photographs of them posing with two of the three main suspects in the police bust, Zehir Beqiri and Adnan Suma.
