Tension escalates in Germany over the handling of the sexual attacks

Ferocious talks emerged in Germany and other European countries over the sexual assaults against women occurred by men of Arab or North African origin on New Year Eve’s  in five German cities and other cities in Europe.

German people demand explanations from German authorities about the handling of the attacks and ask them to reveal the identity of the perpetrators.

Similar assaults were also recorded in other European cities on New Year’s Eve with international media talking about an organized crime.

Women in Salzburg, Austria, in Zurich, Switzerland and Helsinki claimed that they were attacked and robbed by “dark-skinned men”, while German media reveal that the police in Cologne knew the attackers were mainly refugees from Syria, but they did not proceed to any arrests nor did they announce that they knew attackers’ identity.

In Düsseldorf citizens decided to take matters into their own hands by patrolling the streets of the city, while according to a poll conducted by Die Welt 82% of Germans want security cameras to be installed in the streets.

German citizens accuse country’s authorities for not handling the situation properly since they failed to protect the women asking how was it possible for so many assaults to be carried out on New Year’s Eve at the central station of Cologne.

A senior police officer stated the men did not obey to their instructions and since police forces were not sufficient, they couldn’t proceed to arrests. He also stated that due to the big crowd gathered, chaos prevailed and the situation went out of control. According to the officer, police feared that there would be serious injuries and even deaths, while unknown individuals were throwing fireworks and bottles at police.
