Over 70 dead in traffic accidents during Eid al-Adha in Turkey
Over 70 people were killed and hundreds were wounded in traffic accidents that occurred during the nine-day Eid al-Adha holiday in Turkey, Doğan News Agency reported on Sept. 19.
A total of 74 people were killed and 615 people were wounded in 147 traffic accidents in Turkey in spite of precautions taken by police on the roads to prevent a repeat of past holidays in which there have been a large number of fatalities on the road.
The death toll was higher on the first day of the holiday on Sept. 10, with 13 people dying and 79 suffering injuries in 21 accidents. A total of 13 accidents occurred on the second day, resulting in 11 deaths.
The least deadly day was the fourth day of the holiday and the second day of Eid al-Adha, Sept. 13, in which just one person was killed and 16 were wounded in four accidents.
The highest number of accidents occurred on the seventh day of the vacation, with 32 traffic accidents occurring on Sept. 16.
Accidents that occurred on the last day of the holiday on Sept. 18 claimed the lives of seven people in several provinces, including Trabzon, Konya, Aksaray, Bartın, Çorum, Istanbul, Kırıkkale, Sivas, Van, Adıyaman, Kocaeli and Adana.
Deadly traffic accidents usually occur in Turkey during the long Eid holidays, when hundreds of thousands of people take to the road for holiday or to visit family.
