Varoufakis: Schauble wants to control French budget

“Do you have the impression that Schauble cares about Greece? He knows that there is no way the memorandums will succeed in our country. The only thing he wants is to control the French budget”, ex-Finance Minister of Greece Yianis Varoufakis told an audience during the presentation of his new book titled “The Abduction of Europe”. The Greek economist, who currently leads a European political movement called “Diem25”, claimed the German Finance Minister used the crushing of the resistance in Athens as an example to what would happen to other countries who would dare stand up to the policies of austerity. Varoufakis revealed that in private talks with Wolfgang Schauble during his term as Greek Finance Minister, the German politician had told him that he (Schable) had decided to topple the Samaras government in June 2014, as it was no longer useful. “I asked him, ‘Wolfgang, tell me when did you decide to overthrow the Samaras government”, and he responded ‘In June 2014”, said Varoufakis. The self-proclaimed erratic Marxist once more accused his former comrades in the SYRIZA government of surrendering and signing on to a 3rd memorandum. “The night of the referendum we should have remained faithful to the people. We should have prepared the state apparatus and stayed afloat for the next two weeks. They would not have let us leave the Euro”, he claimed, adding that the Europeans would have accepted Greece’s terms. “We did not honour 62% of the Greek public”, he argued.
