US, Iran missions in Turkey closed after attack
Iranian diplomatic missions in Turkey were suspended on Dec. 20 until the next order, an embassy official has told the Hürriyet Daily News. U.S. missions to Turkey were also closed on Dec. 20 for security reasons.
"On December 20th at 3:50 am, an individual approached the U.S. Embassy Ankara main gate and discharged a firearm. There have been no reported injuries and the individual is in police custody. Due to this incident, The U.S Embassy in Ankara, the U.S Consulate General in Istanbul, and the U.S. Consulate in Adana will be closed for normal operations on Tuesday, December 20th," said a U.S. security message to its citizens in Turkey.
"The U.S. Mission reminds U.S. citizens to review personal security plans, ensure communication connectivity, to remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and to monitor local news for breaking events. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security," added the written statement.
Iran condemns attack on Russian envoy
The closures follow the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov in the capital Ankara on Dec. 19.
The Embassy of the Iranian Islamic Republic has condemned the killing of Karlov and expressed solidarity with his family, declaring the attack "inhumane and criminal" in a written statement on Dec. 19.
"This criminal assault shows that these terrorists, who are linked to tekfiri and extremist movements, are not bound by any international law and commit such brutal murders in order to create insecurity and crisis in the direction of their own aims and inhuman scenarios," said the embassy.
