Croatian Fascist Commemorated with Banner in Bosnia

The tribute banner, which depicts Pavelic in uniform, was found in Siroki Brijeg on Thursday morning.

On the banner are written the words "In Madrid, a tomb of gold", a line from a well-known fascist song that continues: "where lies the leader of all Croats".

Pavelic died in the Spanish capital Madrid on December 28, 1959, at the age of 70, and was buried there.

He founded the Croatian ultranationalist Ustasa organisation in 1929 and then ruled the Nazi puppet Independent State of Croatia, NDH, between 1941 and 1945.

Those responsible for hanging the banner have not yet been identified.

The anniversary of Pavelic's death has repeatedly been the flashpoint for controversy in Croatia, where anti-fascist demonstrators have protested outside a church in Zagreb against a mass commemorating the WWII leader which was held as part of a service to mark Holy Innocents' Day.
