Treading carefully

The barrage of significant developments in Greek-Turkish relations over the past couple of months - and especially the last few weeks - are ample proof that nothing can be taken for granted any longer.

Recent events, and particularly those related to the arrest of the two Greek soldiers for accidentally crossing the border, have also underscored that we cannot know what an increasingly nervous and unpredictable Turkey will do next. We cannot gauge how it will respond to the next perceived challenge or what new front it will open in its constantly expanding list of grievances with its rivals, not to mention its allies.

If Greece wants to cross these stormy seas, it will need to be cautious and determined. But it will also need the consensus of all the major political forces on the big issues so it doesn't present a divided front.
