Slovenia expresses support for independent and unbiased ICC

The Hague – Foreign Ministry State Secretary Gašper Dovžan expressed Slovenia’s support for an independent and unbiased International Criminal Court (ICC) and for the international community’s efforts to prevent impunity for international crimes, as he took part in the general debate of the general assembly of signatories of the Rome Statute of the ICC.

Dovžan underlined the importance of encouraging mutual trust and dialogue among all stakeholders in order to strengthen international peace and security, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Monday.

He also stressed the need for full cooperation of signatories with the ICC and the need for the implementation of recommendations stemming from an expert overview of the ICC and the Rome Statute system.

The state secretary moreover expressed support for the mandate of the ICC Trust Fund for Victims, to which Slovenia contributes regularly.

Slovenia also supports initiatives aimed to define and improve understanding of all forms of sexual violence, development and strengthening of international criminal law, and policies and practices in this field, the press release said.

Dovžan also pointed to the growing support for an initiative by Slovenia, Argentina, Belgium, Mongolia, the Netherlands and Senegal for a treaty on mutual legal aid and extraditions in persecution of perpetrators of genocide, crimes against the humanity and war crimes by international courts.

This year, the general assembly of Rome Statute signatories has been divided into two parts: the first running between today and Wednesday in The Hague and the second running between Thursday and 23 December in New York.
