Počivalšek discusses space technology at European Space Conference
Ljubljana – Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek took part in the virtual European Space Conference to present the opportunities for Slovenian science and economy brought by the country’s participation in the European Space Agency. He sees this sector as an opportunity for successful recovery after the coronavirus crisis.
The ministry said in a press release today that Počivalšek had said in his address that the “technological solutions developed as part of space technology are already being introduced in our everyday life.”
At the conference hosted by Business Bridge Europe, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Space Agency and the European Investment Bank, the speakers pointed that space technology would be given special attention and additional funds in the coming years.
They believe that space technologies are important for faster economic development and recovery post-pandemic, for achieving environmental goals, digitalisation, defence and security, as well as for better functioning of the public sector.
“Every single opportunity provided to our companies with high added value will be important for successful exit from the crisis. This is our priority this year,” said Počivalšek.
He added that space technologies would play an important role in the launch of a new economic cycle, as they could contribute to greater productivity, improved mobility, faster digitalisation and more efficient use of resources.
In this sense, many opportunities are available to Slovenia in this field, as the country has opened up this segment to its science sector and business with the membership in the European Space Agency, the ministry said.
Počivalšek noted that, by launching its first two satellites – the nano-satellite Trisat and the micro-satellite HD – last year, Slovenia has placed itself on the global space map.
“Many Slovenian companies are already very successful, in particular when it comes to observing the Earth, and we would like to see many more join them in the future,” he added.
The conference, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, also featured almost 20 round table debates to discuss topical issues, and Slovenian companies also presented themselves at the event, the ministry concluded.
