Sakellaropoulou expresses shock at Navalny death

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou has expressed her shock at the death of jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

"Shocked by the death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent human rights activist dedicated to the fight for freedom and democracy," Sakellaropoulou said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

His death was "a stark reminder of the oppressive nature of the regime that cannot tolerate any dissident voice," she said.

"Navalny sacrificed himself for the ideals we cherish most. He will always be remembered as an example of unparalleled courage and devotion to a higher cause."

Sakellaropoulou concluded by expressing her deepest condolences to Navalny's family.

Earlier, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Navalny's "courage will not be forgotten."
