High temperatures, Beaufort scale winds, and fire danger in four regions today: Which areas are at the forefront

The weather will be particularly warm today as well, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius, while localized rain and isolated thunderstorms will occur during the midday and afternoon hours in Epirus, Macedonia and the rest of the mountainous areas. Winds will reach 7 Beaufort and combined with high temperatures increase the risk of fires.

According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection for today, a very high risk of fires (risk category 4) is forecast for the following areas:

-Attica Region





-The region of Greater Athens, Greece.
-Region of Central Greece (PE Evia)

-Region of Crete

-Region of North Aegean (PE Lesvos, PE Chios, PE Samos, PE Ikaria)

Fifty-six fires were reported in the last 24 hours across the country

It was a tough day for firefighters and civil defence forces yesterday. A total of 55 agroforestry fires occurred between Monday afternoon at 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., of which 46 were immediately dealt with at their initial stage, while firefighters are still dealing with nine more.

However, on Tuesday night firefighting forces were called to deal with another large fire that broke out in ‘Agios Vasilios Rethymnon, with the front being located in Akumia, Prodromos area, Krya Vrysi and towards Triopetra. The fire started late Tuesday night and spread rapidly. The flames were burning farmland, agricultural land.

Twenty minutes before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, a message was sent by “112” to the residents of the areas of Sahtouria, Kato Sahtouria, Agios Peplos, Agia Paraskevi, Triopetra, Akumia, Melambes and Krya Vrysi to remain alert and follow the instructions of the authorities. 33 fire engines, five water trucks and 130 firefighters from all over Crete and 18 Civil Protection vehicles are operating in the area.

– The forest fire in Platanitis of Nafpaktia in Aitoloakarnania was also large, which quickly grew out of control due to strong winds. To extinguish the fire, 80 firefighters with 3 forestry teams and 26 vehicles operated yesterday, while 10 aircraft and 3 helicopters, one of which was a coordinator, periodically carried out water drops from the air. All forces are managed by the Mobile Operations Centre “OLYMPOS”. At 16:11 a 112 message was issued to evacuate residents from the area of Ano Platanitis to Nafpaktos, and at 16:22 a second 112 message was issued to evacuate residents from the areas of Molykreio and Fraggeika to Antirrio.

– The fire that broke out in Karystos is under partial control. 38 firefighters with a team of hikers and 14 vehicles, while 4 aircraft and a helicopter operated.

– The fire in Nea Artaki Evia is contained. At 15:37 a 112 was issued for removal from Akti Valeri to Nea Artaki. 61 firefighters, 2 hiking teams and 20 vehicles are operating while water drops were made by 3 aircraft and 2 helicopters.

– At Markopoulo the worst was avoided. 46 firefighters with 3 hiking teams and 10 vehicles, as well as 3 aerial resources managed to tackle a very dangerous fire in just 15 minutes.

– The fire in Paliabello of Vonitsa is contained. 15 firefighters with 6 vehicles are continuing the extinguishing work, while 2 aircraft operated.

– The fire in Polygyros Halkidiki is under control and 22 firefighters with 9 vehicles are operating, while a helicopter made water drops.

Meanwhile, the Fire Brigade made two arrests for causing fires in Naxos and Phocis, while in six other cases it imposed fines.

The weather today

Sunshine is forecast with a few clouds increasing in the afternoon and evening hours on the mainland and in the Ionian Sea, with local rain or isolated thunderstorms in the mountains of Epirus, Macedonia, Thessaly, Central Sterea and possibly the Peloponnese. The atmospheric circulation favours the transport of dust from North Africa, mainly in the western parts.

The temperature will range from 22 to 35 degrees in Northern Greece (in Western Macedonia from 17 to 33 degrees), 24 to 36 degrees in Central and Southern Greece (in Thessaly locally up to 38 degrees), 21 to 38 degrees in Western Greece, 23 to 32 degrees in the Cyclades and Crete, 24 to 37 degrees in the East Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.

The winds will blow in the Aegean from northern directions, moderate 4-5 Beaufort and locally in the Central and South Aegean strong 6 Beaufort, while in the Ionian Sea from variable directions, light and locally in the morning hours in the Patraikos Gulf from eastern directions almost moderate 4 Beaufort.

Weather.

The phenomena will stop in the evening hours first in the northern Ionian and Epirus and later in Macedonia.

Winds will blow from the north 3 to 5, in the sea 5 to 6, and in the southeastern Aegean 6 to 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will drop slightly, mainly in the north and will reach 33 to 34 degrees Celsius in the west and north, 35 to 36 and 37 degrees Celsius in the central continent and 31 to 33 degrees Celsius in the island country, except in southern Crete, where it will reach 36 degrees Celsius locally.

In Macedonia, increasing clouds with local rain and occasional thunderstorms, possibly strong in places, mainly in the midday and afternoon hours.
In the rest of the regions, generally clear weather and in the midday – afternoon hours clouds will develop on the mainland where there will be local rain or isolated thunderstorms mainly in the mountains. In the evening hours the phenomena will stop first in Macedonia and later in the rest of the regions.
Winds will blow north-northwest, in the Ionian Sea 5 to 6 and occasionally until the afternoon 6 to 7 Beaufort. In the Aegean Sea the winds will blow from northerly directions 6 to 7 Beaufort with gradual strengthening from the evening hours.
The temperature will drop slightly further throughout the country.

WATCH FOR SATURDAY 29-06-2024
Generally clear weather and only in the midday and afternoon hours in the western and northern mainland and the southeastern Aegean will clouds develop.
Winds will blow from the north, in the west 4 to 5 and in the Ionian Sea locally 6 Beaufort, in the east 6 to 7 and locally in the central and southeastern Aegean 8 Beaufort.
The temperature will not show any significant change.

The weather will not change in the south-eastern part of the country.
WATCH FOR SUNDAY 30-06-2024
Generally clear weather and only in the noon and afternoon hours in the northern continents clouds will develop.
The winds will blow from the north 3 to 4 Beaufort, in the Ionian Sea locally 5 and in the Aegean Sea 7 and occasionally in the southeast 8 Beaufort with gradual weakening.
The temperature will rise slightly mainly in the west.

The weather will improve in the southwestern part of the region, with a slight increase in the winds and a slight increase in the southwestern part of the region.
