Weather paradox in Ioannina – In two hours the temperature dropped 16ᵒC and the humidity reached 99%

A storm hit Ioannina at noon on Thursday (11/7), causing a sharp drop in temperature and a simultaneous rise in humidity.

The incident was recorded by Aris Bartzokas, professor of meteorology at the University of Ioannina, and shared on social media by the director of the National Weather Service, Thodoris Kolydas. Specifically, at 2 p.m., the temperature at the University’s weather station was 37 degrees Celsius and the humidity was 22%. Two hours later, the mercury read 21 degrees Celsius, with a humidity rate of 99%. Drop and rise 16°C and 77%, respectively, that is, in the space of two hours.

Kolydas: The temperature will rise further in the coming days

Earlier, EMY director Thodoris Kolydas warned of further temperature rise in the coming days in a post on X about the weather in the coming days. As he explained, the new rise in temperature is due to the tendency of warm air masses located in the west and east of the country to cover many areas.

On the contrary, by Saturday, “meltemi (strong wind),” will remain in the east at high but relatively tolerable levels, Kolydas said.

However, “locally, there will be no shortage of 40 to 41°C in the interior of mainland Greece and in areas not affected by the sea breeze,” the EMY director noted.

Marousakis sees plenty of heat for 15 days

Meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis spoke earlier today in a Facebook post about the weather of the next several days, asking everyone to “put aside for the next 10 to 15 days activities that burden the human body.”

As shown in an attached chart of the models’ predictions about the temperature trendat least through July 17, he notes that the average “is above 35 degrees, but also around 40.”

“We are not talking about extreme heat, but as we stress every summer, the heat works cumulatively on the burden of the human body and the long duration tires the human body and not only,” Marousakis added.

He also pointed out that “as long as we can look into the depths of the forecast tunnel, there are no signs of cooler weather and no rains either”, adding that “if we add to this whole scenario the winds and take into account the severe drought that has preceded it, we understand that conditions will not only not be pleasant, but on the contrary they will be very dangerous as the risk of fire will be very high and for many many days”.
