F1: The safety car… crashed! – Video
The German Safety Car driver and his co-driver were able to exit the car easily and without injury. However, the FIA has yet to explain the cause of the accident.
Mayländer was performing the routine Safety Car preparation that takes place before every race weekend. This includes checking all the car’s systems and conducting a few fast laps. For the Italian GP, the Safety Car is the upgraded Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition, which has an additional 150 horsepower this year.

As seen in the video above, Mayländer loses control of the rear end as he brakes for the corner named after Michele Alboreto, previously known as Parabolica.
The car veers off at high speed towards the escape area and crashes into the protective tires. The damage is primarily to the front of the car.
In a statement, the FIA clarified that they will investigate the cause of the accident. They also noted that there is always a second Safety Car available at the track, so this incident will not affect the race.
Mayländer has been the Safety Car driver in F1 since 2000 and has never had a similar incident before. In contrast, the FIA’s medical car has had two accidents in the past with Alex Ribeiro behind the wheel—one in Monaco in 2000 and another in Brazil in 2002.
