Weather: North winds are getting stronger from today – Temperature in autumn levels

Winds in the Aegean are expected to pick up starting today, Wednesday, with stronger gusts tomorrow, Thursday, reaching up to 8 Beaufort, especially in the central and southern parts of the sea. Temperatures will also drop across most of the country, with the east feeling it the most.

In the northeastern mainland and northern Aegean, temperatures won’t exceed 20°C. By Friday and into the weekend, temperatures will dip further, with highs in the central and northern mainland, as well as the northern and central Aegean islands, reaching just 16-18°C. This cooler weather, with temperatures around 20°C, is expected to continue into next week.

Today, Wednesday, the forecast is mostly sunny across the country, with only a few scattered clouds at times. Winds will come from the north, reaching 3 to 4 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea, 5 to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean, and locally up to 7 Beaufort later in the day, with further strengthening overnight. Temperatures will remain steady, ranging between 24 to 28 degrees in most regions.

In Attica, the weather will also be mostly clear with occasional clouds. Winds will be northeasterly at 5 to 6 Beaufort, and temperatures will rise to around 27-28 degrees. Similarly, Thessaloniki will experience generally clear weather, with light variable winds of 3 to 4 Beaufort and temperatures up to 26 degrees.

Detailed Forecast by Ziakopoulos:

Barometric lows, accompanied by bad weather fronts, are moving from the Atlantic toward Western Europe. For Greece, the focus is on a cold front currently in the northeastern Balkans, which will approach the country on Thursday. As a result, the weather on Wednesday will feature high seasonal temperatures, sunshine across most areas, and stronger N-NE winds, especially in the Aegean.

However, on Thursday (17/10), expect local clouds and light showers in central Macedonia, Thessaly, and Eastern Sterea-Euboea. Winds will blow N-NE at 3 to 5 Beaufort in the west, 6 to 7 in the east, and up to 8 Beaufort in parts of the Cyclades, Kythera, Crete, and the Karpathian Sea. Temperatures will drop, especially in the eastern and northern regions.

On Friday, (18/10), the new element in the weather development will be the gradual weakening of the north winds, whose intensity in the Aegean Sea will drop to 6 Beaufort in the evening.

The weather will gradually improve in the southeastern part of the island, with the winds of the south-eastern part of the island reaching the south-eastern coast.

For the weekend (19-20/10), the question to be answered soon is whether the notable precipitation in NW Greece is offshore, tangential to the coast or on it. The eastward surface current in the region is not the best for anything significant, but the dynamic cause, as captured in the mid-troposphere, may turn the data upside down.

General Overview

The day will start off mostly clear, but from noon onwards, light clouds will appear over the Ionian Sea, and the western mainland, and gradually spread across other mainland regions and coastal areas.
