Greece shuts Kyiv embassy

Greece, Italy and Spain have shuttered their embassies in Kyiv following US warnings of potential Russian retaliation for recent Ukrainian strikes inside Russian territory using US-supplied precision missiles.

The closures highlight growing unease as the conflict in Ukraine reaches a perilous new phase. Washington's decision to permit Ukrainian forces to use ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia has drawn sharp responses.

A Kremlin spokesman announced the suspension of the historic "red line" communication channel with the White House, established during the Cold War.

Russia has also updated its nuclear doctrine, lowering the threshold for deploying nuclear weapons, even against non-nuclear states engaging in hostilities with NATO backing.
