UN names Anogeia among best villages for sustainable tourism

Anogeia in Crete has been named one of the world's best 55 tourism villages for 2024 by UN Tourism. The village was praised for its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and its impact on society, economy and the environment.

"The award recognizes a global initiative that highlights villages where tourism supports, rather than hinders, their cultures and traditions, while promoting sustainable development, creating opportunities, and preserving biodiversity," said mayor of Anogeia Socratis Kefalogiannis in an interview with Greek newspaper Proto Thema.

"Through this recognition, the World Tourism Organization is highlighting rural communities, including Anogia, to the global tourism market as leaders in shaping the future of sustainable travel," he added.

The villages of Pissouri and Kalopanagiotis in Cyprus also received recognition.
