Crete’s rising domestic violence exposes failures

Reports of domestic violence against women on Crete are rising, with 1,151 cases filed from January to September, averaging four incidents daily, according to a report by the Women's Violence Observatory. 

One survivor recounted how a lawyer advised her to stay with her abuser rather than leave for her safety. Another endured threats from her husband, who idolized a high-profile murderer, before law enforcement finally intervened after multiple reports. 

Support networks proved critical, helping women navigate barriers to legal action.

The observatory, part of the BUILD program, emphasizes the need for specialized training for police, medical staff, and legal professionals to better protect survivors.
