Crete murder suspect’s violent history was not divulged to psychiatrists, clinic director says

The chief psychiatrist at Rethymno hospital who evaluated and released a 33-year-old French man who went on a week later to kill a woman with his car, said on Thursday that the offender may have been committed if his violent history had been known, according to state broadcaster ERT.

The suspect was evaluated at the clinic on December 12, after being admitted by court order. He was evaluated and released after refusing to follow the prescribed medical treatment.

According to ERT, the director of the hospital's psychiatric clinic saw no signs of serious mental illness during the assessment, but added that critical details about the suspect's prior arrests for domestic violence, harassment and assault had not been provided.
