Fire breaks out in Preveza, blaze on Lesvos contained

A wildfire broke out on Saturday in the Ziros municipality in the Preveza regional unit of Epirus.

The blaze, which is consuming forest land, is being tackled by 65 firefighters with 21 fire engines, assisted by five water-dropping aircraft and two helicopters.

Wildfire breaks out on Lesvos

A fire broke out on Saturday on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos. 

Fanned by strong northerly winds, the blaze is currently burning forest land near the village of Kapi, in the Mantamados area northwest of the capital, Mytilene. 

It is being tackled by 30 firefighters with 10 fire engines, supported by seven water-dropping aircraft and one helicopter.

A serious incident occurred off the coast of Chios on Friday morning involving a migrant boat attempting to approach the island. The boat, carrying migrants, was spotted by the Coast Guard, which promptly dispatched a vessel to the scene. Shots were fired from the migrants’ speedboat toward the Coast Guard vessel, prompting the coast guards to respond with warning shots into the air.
