Wildfire in Evia rages on, all-night battle by firefighters

The fire that erupted on Monday afternoon on Evia Island continued to blaze through the night, prompting additional evacuations as firefighters worked tirelessly to control the flames.

During the night and early Tuesday morning, new evacuation alerts were issued via 112 messages to residents in Klimaki, Liani Ammo, Petries, and Krieza.

The number of agroforestry fires that occurred in the last 24 hours of which 43 were immediately treated at their initial stage, while firefighting forces continue to deal with 11 fires, as the Fire Brigade’s spokesman, Fire Brigadier Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, stressed a short while ago during an emergency briefing.

Wildfire in Evia expands, more evacuations ordered

The wildfire that broke out on Monday afternoon in eastern Evia, between the villages of Petries and Krieza, has expanded across three fronts.

With strong winds blowing in the area, the fire burns uncontrolled, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of the Petries settlement and to close parts of the road network.

Wildfire breaks out in Evia, evacuations ordered

A forest fire broke out on the island of Evia, between the villages of Petries and Krieza, on the eastern side of the island on Monday. 

Residents of Krieza and Kokkina received a 112 message asking them to evacuate to safer areas.

Some 120 firefighters with 22 vehicles have been dispatched to the area, while 11 planes and three helicopters are assisting from the air.
