Turkish telecommunications workers arrested on Rhodes released

Their presence in the area was reported to the South Rhodes police station by a local government official. The construction of mobile phone antennas in border areas requires a special permit from the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT), which the Turkish nationals did not have with them.

Mandra mayor warns of approaching wildfire

The wildfire raging in Dervenochoria, about 30 km north of Athens, is now threatening the town of Mandra (near Elefsina) and settlements around it, its mayor has said.

Christos Stathis, mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia, urged residents to evacuate as a precautionary measure in the face of the approaching fire front, which is estimated to be 20-kilometers long.

Four villages evacuated as Viotia blaze spreads

The residents of four parts of Dervenohoria in Viotia, northwest of Athens, were ordered to evacuate towards the West Attica town of Mandra on Tuesday as a wildfire started to approach homes and thick smoke filled the air.

Panorama, Pournari, Palaiohori and Agios Sotiras were being evacuated, as the blaze also crossed regional lines into Attica, heading towards Vilia and Oinoi.

Dead dolphins, turtle to be buried

Coast Guard authorities have arranged for the burial of two dolphins and a Caretta caretta turtle that were found dead earlier this week, reports said on Wednesday.

One of the dolphins was found off the coast of Karames in northwestern Sifnos and the other off Port Lagos, in northern Greece, on Tuesday morning.

Attica governor and another 10 summoned over Mandra floods

Following months of investigation, the Athens prosecutor's office has summoned Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou and another 10 officials as suspects in connection with the flash floods in Mandra, western Attica, last November, which resulted in the death of 23 people and the destruction of hundreds of properties.
