Mandra flooded again as red tape holds up works

An aerial view of Mandra in western Attica on Wednesday showed local streets submerged in floodwaters following several hours of heavy rainfall. Ioanna Kriekouki, the mayor of Mandra, where 20 people died in flash floods last November, said on Wednesday that there has been no progress in flood-prevention work pledged by the government.

Flood aid approved for western Attica

The Attica Regional Authority has announced works to the tune of 6.7 million euros to repair damage wrought by the catastrophic floods in Mandra, western Attica, on November 15 last year.

Regional Governor Rena Dourou and the Mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia Ioanna Kriekouki approved 4.35 million euros to repair damage to existing roads and pavements in Mandra.

'The water took everything'

A barefoot Costas Maroulis 62 stands in front of piled up vehicles in the town of Mandra western Athens, following deadly flash floods that hit the area hours before. A shoulder-high wall of floodwater smashed into Maroulis's home where his fought to save his elderly mother-in-law, keeping her head above his own until flooding finally subsided.
