Two dead as downpour near Athens floods roads, traps residents
Heavy overnight rain flooded towns near Athens on Wednesday, killing two people, trapping others in their homes and cars and shutting schools.
Roads in Nea Peramos, 27 km (17 miles) west of Athens, turned into fast-flowing rivers of mud, TV footage showed.
Large EU fine looms over wastewater
Greece faces a fine of at least 17 million euros for failing to comply with European Union wastewater treatment regulations at the Thriaseio Plain in western Attica.
The European Commission has proposed that Greece should face additional fines for every day that it fails to get the facilities serving the towns of Elefsina, Aspropyrgos, Magoula and Mandra up to scratch.

Greece facing millions of euros in fines over waste-water treatment
The European Commission is seeking to slap Greece with a fine of more than 16 million euros for failure to comply with waste-water treatment regulations at the Thriasio Plain in western Attica. Greece will also face additional fines for every day that it fails to get the facilities serving the towns of Elefsina, Aspropyrgos, Magoula and Mandra up to scratch.
