EU Commissioner Rejected the Idea of Financing a Fence along the Bulgarian-Turkish Border
European Union interior ministers discussed on Thursday ways to curb illegal immigration and return more migrants amid a surge in arrivals following lows during the pandemic, Reuters reported.
The agency notes that controversial ideas about border fences and centers for asylum seekers outside Europe have been revived.
Greece referred to ECJ for failing to take action against alien species
The European Commission decided Thursday to refer Greece and five more countries to the EU Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to implement provisions in the bloc's regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species.
The five other countries referred to the ECJ are Bulgaria, Ireland, Italy, Latvia and Portugal.
The European Commission urges Bulgaria to Reduce Air Pollution
The European Commission today called on Bulgaria and 13 other EU countries to reduce air pollution. The others affected are Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Sweden.
EU wants to send more migrants away as irregular arrivals grow
European Union ministers on Thursday sought ways to curb irregular immigration and send more people away as arrivals rose from pandemic lows, reviving controversial ideas for border fences and asylum centres outside of Europe.
EU border agency Frontex reported some 330,000 unauthorised arrivals last year, the highest since 2016, with a sharp increase on the Western Balkans route.
Russians in Bulgaria Donate Jeeps for Ukraine
Russians who fled to Bulgaria donated jeeps to a Ukrainian non-governmental organization.
The three vehicles will be used in the war against Russia, said Flora Akhmetova from the organization.
"This is the contribution of Russian citizens to Ukraine's victory over Putin's criminal regime, which seized state power in Russia," Akhmetova pointed out.

Bulgaria is the Third Importer of Turkish Tomatoes in the World
The leading importer of tomatoes from Turkey in 2022 was Romania, where production was delivered for the amount of 65,228 million dollars. It is followed by Ukraine - 45,320 million dollars, and Bulgaria - 38,113 million dollars.
Greece has Europe’s oldest professors
Greece has the oldest university lecturers in Europe and the fewest aged under 35, according to a recent report by the National Authority for Higher Education (EThAAE). More specifically, of the 17,049 permanent lecturers at Greek universities, more than half are over 50.

Estonia is Expelling 21 Russian Diplomats
Estonia announced that it is expelling 21 Russian diplomats and other employees of the Russian embassy in order to "achieve parity" in the number of diplomatic personnel, BTA reported.
"There is no justification for the current size of the Russian embassy," Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a statement.
