Council established to help improve Serbian agriculture

PANCEVO - The Agricultural Council, a body that should help improve the Serbian agriculture - primarily through cooperation with Austria - was founded in Pancevo on Wednesday at a constitutive session.

Established as an affiliate of the Serbian Economic Council, the Agricultural Council will be presided over by Dragan Glamocic, a professor of the Novi Sad Faculty of Agriculture and former agriculture minister.

Agro-economic analyst Milan Prostran was appointed vice president of the Council, which has a total of nine members who are professionals in the field.

Austrian companies will take part in the restructuring and reviving of the processing sector, in particular, fruit and vegetable processing.

Experts say that the Austrian and Serbian agriculture and processing industries complement each other.

A transfer of technologies is possible in the meat and dairy industry, fruit and vegetable processing, organic agriculture, breeding stock of farm animals and the oil, starch and sugar industries, which represents a great opportunity to expand the cooperation between the two countries, they say.

The Council will not be sealing deals or signing agreements - its role will be to connect Serbian and Austrian partners, who will establish cooperation through official institutions, Glamocic said.

The Council brings together representatives of the Fruits of Serbia and Zdravo organik associations, the Sremska Mitrovica Farmers Union, the Grains of Serbia Association, the Valjevo Agricultural Cooperative, the Association of Cooperatives and the Association of Seed Producers.
