Evia: Uncontrolled fire near houses, has crossed the highway – Firefighter injured

The large fire raging between two villages in Evia has reached alarming proportions, with the fire brigade constantly reinforcing its ground and air forces and the Civil Protection sending four 112 messages.

A firefighter was injured and was taken to the Aliveri Health Centre.

According to the latest update from the Fire Department, 24 air assets, 16 aircraft and 8 helicopters are dropping firefighters, while ground forces are composed of 136 firefighters and 43 vehicles.

The fire broke out between the village of Petries and Krieza in a wooded area near houses. Indicative of the criticality of the situation is the statement of a local resident who told evima.gr: “the fire is a breath away from our houses. We can see the flames.”

Strong winds created a new front heading towards the plain of Dystos.

Firefighters tried to stop it along the highway, but the fire has passed through and is developing a large front into the Dystou plain.

The other front of the fire is moving rapidly from Petries to Krieza.

Already in the area have been transferred and digging machines and water-bearing vehicles of the OTA and the Region of Central Greece.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. a message was sent from 112 to residents of the area about the fire stating, “remain alert and follow the instructions of the authorities.”

In the second 112 message, shortly after 15:45, residents were asked to move away from Krieza to Lepoura and Velo and from Koskina to Zarakes and Mesochoria

A few minutes later, they were called to evacuate from Petrie to Holy Apostles.

A fourth 112 message was then sent for removal from the Krieza area to Velos.

The winds blowing area are north strong with gusts of 7 Beaufort.

A fireboat has, at the same time, gone from Piraeus to the area. The Coast Guard and the forces of the Police have been informed of similar actions. and have been deployed in the area to facilitate the evacuation of residents.

By boat from Agia Marina, 53 firefighters with 4 teams of hiking teams and 10 vehicles have been dispatched.

The coordination of all forces is carried out by the Mobile Operational Center OLYMPOS.

The dimensions of the fire are such that the smoke is visible even from the port of Rafina.
