Tragedy in Italy: 19-year-old ski champion Matilde Lorenzi dies in training accident
Nineteen-year-old alpine ski champion Matilde Lorenzi, a member of the Italian army’s sports division, passed away from injuries sustained during a training accident, the Italian Ministry of Defense announced.
Lorenzi was training on the Gravald G1 slope in Val Senales, South Tyrol, when she suffered a severe fall. Despite immediate helicopter transport to Bolzano Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries on the morning of Tuesday, October 29.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) extends its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi.

Her sister, Lucrezia, also a competitive skier, shared the tragic news and funeral details on Instagram. “With profound sadness, I announce that our Matilde has left us,” she wrote, inviting friends and loved ones to say their farewells at San Lorenzo Church in Giaveno on Wednesday, October 30, at 6 p.m.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella extended his condolences in a message to Defense Chief of Staff Luciano Portolano:
“I learned with deep sorrow of the passing of Matilde Lorenzi, a corporal with the Alpine Training Center’s sports division. During this profoundly sad time, please convey my heartfelt condolences to her family and express my solidarity with the Italian army.”
Both the Italian Winter Sports Federation and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation expressed their condolences for Lorenzi’s tragic passing.
