Tahir Elçi, a human rights activist and the head of the Bar Association in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r, was killed in a gun attack following a press statement on Nov. 28, while two policemen were also killed during a clash just meters away. 

As many as 1,000 attorneys are expected to represent Özgecan Aslan in the very first court hearing on June 12 in the case over her brutal murder. The 20-year-old's burned body was found in a river bed in the Mediterranean province of Mersin two days after she was killed by a minibus driver on Feb. 11.

BELGRADE - The presidents of the Bar Associations of Serbia, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo-Metohija and Macedonia have inked a memorandum of understanding with an eye to mutual cooperation and support.

Lawyers say negotiations with ministry "collapsed"

BELGRADE -- The Bar Association of Serbia said on Monday that talks with the Ministry of Justice had collapsed, and that ministry for the outcome.

The talks lasted two weeks and seven meetings were held, the Beta agency reported.

The head of the Montenegrin Bar Association, Zdravko Begovic, said action will be taken against any Montenegrin attorneys taking advantage of the strike by Serbian lawyers to represent suspects before courts in Belgrade.

Lawyers "ask for help from EU institutions"

BELGRADE -- President of the Bar Association of Serbia (AKS) Dragoljub Đorđević said Thursday that lawyers' strike would continue.

He added that the AKS had asked for help from European institutions, but voiced hope that lawyers would have enough energy to resume negotiations with the Serbian government.
