Catalonia’s parliament will convene on March 12 to appoint a new regional president, with jailed separatist Jordi Sanchez the only candidate, the assembly said on March 6.

The sacked speaker of Catalonia’s parliament was preparing to leave a prison near Madrid on Nov. 10 as supporters posted her 150,000-euro bail a day after she was detained over her region’s independence drive.

Spain’s state prosecutor has called for Catalonia’s leaders to be charged with rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds over their push for independence.

Attorney-General Jose Manuel Maza said he had filed two lawsuits seeking the prosecution of the ousted Catalan cabinet and the regional parliament amid mounting tensions following this month’s referendum.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy today (October 11) asked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont for more clarity on his declaration of independence from Spain.
He said the Spanish government was to discern “whether they (Catalan leaders) have or will make an independence declaration” before taking further measures.
