Turkey's foreign trade deficit declined to $5.5 billion in June with a nearly 8.9 percent year-on-year decrease, preliminary data from the Customs and Trade Ministry has shown.

Turkey’s trade deficit widened by 37.5 percent last year to $77.1 billion, data from the Customs and Trade Ministry showed on Jan. 2.

Turkey imported 62.8 tons of gold in July, the highest on a monthly basis since the establishment of the Borsa Istanbul Precious Metals Markets in 1995. 

This represented a 1.328 percent year-on-year increase compared to the same month of 2016, when some 4,401 tons of gold was imported. 

Turkey's foreign trade gap surged 80.4 percent in July and exceeded $8.7 billion due to a steep rise in gold imports and a base effect that resulted from a failed coup last July.

After a three-year wait, Turkey's famous home-grown apricot has earned a coveted EU geographical indication, boosting hopes of bolstering the fruit's export and marketing.

According to a statement on July 7 from the Customs and Trade Ministry, apricots produced in the eastern province of Malatya became the second Turkish product to get the EU designation after the Aegean fig.

Turkey's automotive production hit 727,997 units in the first five months of the year with an around 22.5 percent year-on-year increase mainly due to export reasons, data from a leading sector association showed on June 8.

The trade deficit rose to $7.65 billion in May, according to the ministry's data, which was compiled by Reuters. 

Turkey's year-on-year trade deficit rose by 15.8 percent in April to over $4.9 billion, according to a preliminary estimate revealed by the Customs and Trade Ministry on May 2.        

Youths in Turkey typically prefer to shop in malls, while people above the age of 50 tend to prefer shopping from small local business owners, according to research conducted by the Customs and Trade Ministry, daily Habertürk reported on April 5.
