Ljubljana – The deputy group of the opposition Democrats (SDS) has proposed a resolution in support of a resolution by the European Parliament that is dedicated to the fight against impunity for war crimes in Ukraine. The party has requested an extraordinary session for the National Assembly to vote on the matter.

Strasbourg – The European Parliament has endorsed Jorg Kristijan Petrovič, Slovenia’s candidate for the European Court of Auditors. Wednesday’s non-binding vote was 487 in favour and 196 against with 11 abstentions.

Today, the legal service of the European Parliament filed an appeal with the Court of Justice at the request of President David Sassoli, said the spokesperson of the EU Parliament.

Ljubljana – The European political map was divided along the familiar lines this week on the issue of the rule of law and other issues, Dnevnik says. Only the extreme right in the EU Parliament and Viktor Orban – partly also Janez Janša – showed understanding as Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki “roared against Brussels institutions and the EU law”.

Strasbourg – PM Janez Janša said as he addressed the European Parliament on Tuesday he believed the time had come for the EU to start acting more strategically, including in the Western Balkans. Presenting the Slovenian EU presidency’s priorities, he said the first short-term priority was to do everything to prevent the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Ljubljana – First Vice-President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has spoken to the STA ahead of her visit to Slovenia, saying that the country could push forward the EU priorities over the next six months as it assumes the EU Council presidency. She also discussed the Conference on the Future of Europe.

Brussels/Ljubljana – Prime Minister Janez Janša highlighted the EU’s resilience and post-pandemic recovery as key topics of Slovenia’s upcoming EU presidency at today’s virtual meeting with the European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents. Slovenia will cooperate closely with the Parliament, Janša said.

Brussels – MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld (Renew/D66), chair of the European Parliament’s democracy monitoring group, has rejected allegations of censorship by Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša. An impression that the Parliament is an opponent of Slovenia’s is regrettable and far from the truth, she told the STA on Monday.

Brussels – Addressing the EU Parliament plenary on Wednesday, EU Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova pointed to continuous attempts to undermine the sustainable funding and the independence of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA). She also noted that frequent verbal attacks against journalists in the country were cause for concern.
