New Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis, in his fifth stint at the ministry overseeing the security forces since 1999, has his work cut out for him as he tries to overhaul the Hellenic Police.

A 44-year-old Norwegian national, arrested for the murder of a 32-year-old off-duty Hellenic Police (ELAS) officer at a beer house in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, is scheduled to appear before a prosecutor on Friday.

Athens mayor-elect Haris Doukas and the new city council are to be sworn into office at 11 a.m. on Thursday, in a ceremony at the Kypseli Municipal Market that will not be attended by the convicted far-right councillor Ilias Kasidiaris.

An officer with the Hellenic Police (ELAS) was killed in the early hours of Thursday in an altercation at a bar in the northern port city of Thessaloniki.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the unnamed police officer, aged 32, died after being stabbed with a knife for reprimanding another customer over his rowdy behavior. 

Students and police forces engaged in a tense standoff, which at times spilled over, on Friday outside a hotel in Kavouri on the southern coast of Athens where a meeting of university deans was taking place. 

Some 800 students were protesting against the establishment of private universities. 

A joint European operation to repatriate  irregular migrants was organized on Wednesday by Greece along with Spain, Italy and Cyprus, in cooperation with the Hellenic Police and coordinated by the EU border agency, Frontex. 

Greece repatriated 20 Georgians and 28 Pakistanis whose applications for asylum had been rejected. 

A criminal organization engaging in tax fraud totaling over 15 million euros and tax evasion of 70 million euros was dismantled by the Economic Police Directorate in Greece, reported the Hellenic Police (ELAS) on Wednesday.

During the investigation of the 49-year-old hair salon owner, who was arrested on Saturday after the police located hidden cameras in the salon's toilets, more hidden cameras were found inside his home, reported the Hellenic Police (ELAS) on Monday.

A 22-year-old Greek woman was arrested in Athens on Thursday after importing cannabis from the US, reported the Hellenic Police on Sunday. 

The woman was arrested after receiving a suspicious package from the US, containing approximately 1.5 kilograms of raw cannabis. 

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) announced on Thursday that 193 people were detained, of whom 30 were arrested, in connection with street riots that erupted in Athens and Thessaloniki on Wednesday night after marches and rallies commemorating the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos in 2008 by a police special guard.
