As Syrians who fled the clashes between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Kurdish forces have started returning to Tal Abyad after the jihadists' defeat, Kurdish militia have discovered a torture center and prison cells in the Syrian town. 

Kurdish militia, backed by Syrian rebel forces, seized full control of a key border town from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group jihadists early on June 16, a monitoring group said. 

"Since dawn this morning, not a single bullet has been fired in Tal Abyad," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.    

Kurdish fighters advanced June 13 to the outskirts of a key Syrian border town held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as Turkish forces sought to prevent thousands fleeing the fighting from crossing the frontier.

Further west, an Islamist rebel alliance pushed ISIL extremists back from a strategic cross-border supply route.    

Kurdish forces have driven the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group from more than a dozen Assyrian Christian villages that the jihadists had captured in northeastern Syria, a monitor said May 27.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) insurgents blew up an 80-year-old church in Syria's northeastern province of Hassaka on Easter Sunday, Syrian state news agency SANA said.

The death toll from attacks on Kurdish new year celebrations in Syria has risen to 45, including five children, a monitor said March 21, accusing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) of responsibility.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) launched a major offensive on March 11 to try to capture a strategic town on the Syrian-Turkish border, sparking fierce clashes with Kurdish militia, a monitor said.
      
"Fighters from ISIL started a huge assault towards Ras al-Ain, and were able to take over a village nearby," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Syrian regime forces and Kurdish militia fought separate battles with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on March 2 in a strategic area near the Iraqi and Turkish borders, a monitoring group said.
      

Kurdish militia pressed a big offensive against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northeast Syria Feb. 25, cutting one of its supply lines from Iraq, as fears mounted for dozens of Christians abducted by the hardline group that recently beheaded 21 Egyptian Copts.
