Turkish fighter jets in military exercise to protect historic site in Syria from ISIL

The commander of the Turkish Air Force, Gen. Akın Öztürk, inspected a military exercise on Oct. 21 aimed at protecting frontier military posts, including the Tomb of Süleyman Şah in Syria.

The tomb has recently come into focus as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) made incursions into the region, according to both Turkish and U.S. officials.

Turkish pilot assaulted by Kuwaiti embassy officials in Ankara

A Turkish Air Force pilot was seriously assaulted in broad daylight Sept. 11 by a Kuwaiti diplomat and embassy officials after a quarrel broke out on Ankara’s streets.

The F-16 fighter jet pilot, Hakan Karakuş, who works at NATO, was in Ankara on paternal leave. He was on his way to a healthcare center with his wife so his six-month-old baby could be vaccinated.

Turkish F-16 fighter jet crashes in Diyarbakır

An F-16 fighter aircraft belonging to the Turkish Air Force crashed today on landing in the southeast of the country.

The jet, part of the 2nd Air Force Command based in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır, crashed, Deputy Gov. Ahmet Günaydın told Anadolu Agency. He said the plane's engine caught fire during landing.

The fragile Kurdish peace

Last Sunday, a young Kurdish protestor who masked his face entered a Turkish Air Force base in the predominantly Kurdish province of Diyarbakır. He climbed up the pole, reached out to the Turkish flag, and took it down. The military personnel, somehow, could not stop him.
