UN chief condemns PKK attacks in Turkey

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sept. 8 condemned the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) recent attacks in Turkey which have killed dozens of soldiers and police officers since Sept. 6.

"[Ban] conveys his condolences to the families of the victims and expresses his deep sympathy to the government and people of Turkey," read a statement issued by his spokesperson.

Croatian Leaders Row Over Pusic's UN Candidacy

Croatia's centre-left government on Thursday offered official support to Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic in her bid to become the new UN Secretary General.

Her candidacy was unofficially raised in February and her chances appeared high, as it is thought that the next UN Secretary will come from Eastern or Southeastern Europe.

Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva is leaving for the US on Saturday to take part in the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.

The forum, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), will take place on August 31 - September 2, 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, according to a media statement of Bulgaria's Parliament.

US Magazine Condemns UNESCO Director-General Bokova as Fervent Communist

In an article published on Wednesday, The New American magazine identified the Director-General of UNESCO and likely candidate for UN Secretary-General, Irina Bokova, as a fervent communist.

The article is critical of US President Barack Obama for his apparent support for the candidacy of Bokova.

Child bomber kills up to six in northeast Nigeria

A child bomber killed up to six people on Aug. 25 outside a bus station in the heartland of the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.

Witnesses reported seeing a "young girl" trying to get into the station in the Yobe state capital Damaturu around 7:00 am and refusing to be searched by security guards at the gate before blowing herself up.
