BELGRADE -- International Workers Day, May 1, is known in Serbia as Labor Day and is a two-day non-working holiday in the country.
It is traditionally marked with early morning picnics and barbecues known in Serbian as "uranak" - and with protests organized by trade unions.

SSSS and UGS Independence become ETUC members
BELGRADE - The Alliance of Independent Unions of Serbia (SSSS) and the United Branch Trade Unions (UGS) Independence became members of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), SSSS President Ljubisav Orbovic and UGS Independence President Branislav Canak released on Friday.

Trade unions decide to go on general strike
BELGRADE - Ljubisav Orbovic and Branislav Canak, the leaders of the two representative unions, signed a decision on Tuesday to go on a general strike as of July 17 until the proposed changes to the laws on labor and pension and disability insurance are withdrawn from the procedure.

Unions vow to continue fighting against labor law
BELGRADE -- Two representative unions will stage a protest in Belgrade on Tuesday against changes to the Labor Law, and new legislation on pension and disability insurance.
The protest will come as the drafts, adopted by the government on Saturday, are debated in parliament.
