Commenting on a staff walkout on the Athens metro that left thousands of commuters stranded and motorists caught up in traffic jams all over the Greek capital on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the "government will not be blackmailed by 21 people who were simply asked to do their jobs."

The government will not tolerate one small group of unionists holding thousands of commuters "hostage," Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis said on Tuesday, lashing out at strikers on the Athens metro who walked off the job from the start of the morning shift until 10 a.m.

I am not sure why Kostas Karamanlis has decided to resume an active public role at this point in time. Following his recent speech at the Society for Macedonian Studies in Thessaloniki, he is due for another appearance next Wednesday at City, University of London, while he may also speak at Tufts Fletcher School in Boston at a later date as well.

Attiki Odos toll hikes halted

Attiki Odos SA, the company that manages the Attica ring road, has agreed to freeze a planned hike to toll charges until the end of the year after calling a truce with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The ministry, in turn, has held back a bill prepared by the previous government halting the raise until the motorway's concession is re-examined.
