PASOK MP Nadia Giannakopoulou has announced her candidacy for the party leadership race.

In a statement on Wednesday, the 46-year-old lawyer said her goal is to bring about a "new change… with a different model of governance."

The three candidates for the leadership of PASOK so far will meet in September. During the intervening days, Haris Doukas, Pavlos Geroulanos, and the current president, Nikos Androulakis, plan to seize every opportunity to promote their candidacies.

A new chapter opened today for PASOK, with most of its members attending the crucial Central Committee meeting, convinced that their proposal for an immediate leadership election this fall will finally be accepted by Nikos Androulakis.

PASOK MEP Nikos Papandreou has entered the ongoing debate about the future of the socialist party's leadership following disappointing results in the recent European elections. 

With the European Court set to announce the total fine for Greece’s flouting of European waste management laws on December 2, the Environment Ministry’s general secretary Nadia Giannakopoulou said the government had intensified its coordination with local and regional authorities to close down dozens of illegal landfills around the country.
